Randolph

Randolph has public sewer in parts of town, but a large number of homes, especially on the larger wooded lots, still use septic systems. The township takes septic seriously. The health department requires a permit for all septic work, issues licenses for operating systems and ties renewal to proof of pumping or an inspection. That makes regular service with good records more than a good habit here. A local septic contractor can handle the pump out, pull the small pumping permit and leave you the paperwork you need.

Randolph sits in the New Jersey Highlands, and the township's own conservation planning describes ground that changes fast from one lot to the next. About half the township has bedrock around seven feet down, but on ridges and steep slopes it can sit right under the topsoil, and more than 2,100 acres have slopes over 15 percent, which the township treats as severely limiting for effluent disposal. Lower ground along the Black River in the northwest and along Mill Brook and other Rockaway River tributaries carries wetlands and soils with a high seasonal water table. Randolph also drains three ways, into the Rockaway, Whippany and Raritan basins, and many homes on septic draw from private wells over sole source aquifers, so a healthy system protects your own water.
